This weekend should see the end of the wave drought

BUST out the wax and dust off the old plank, it looks as if the surf will pick-up later this week.

Forecast models suggest a complex low pressure system will form off the Coast later this week sending a large - albeit messy swell our way.

SHARK NETS BEING PULLED DUE TO DANGEROUS SURF FORECAST

The Bureau of Meteorology's maps show a south/south easterly swell up to four metres (12 feet) on Sunday, Sunshine Coast surf expert Josh Sherwell is expecting the swell to be a lot smaller and hit our beaches a few days earlier.

"You got me excited to study the charts," he said.

Sherwell said "there's 100% going to be waves" on the East Coast this weekend.

"If it gets to 8ft (on the Sunshine Coast) like the forecast says, I'll be impressed," he said.

"I'm confident it'll be 4-5ft on Friday but the wind will be 15knot SSE so it won't be a clean swell, unfortunately."

Sherwell said it could disappear as quickly as it comes and advised surfers to make the most of the conditions.

"Stick to the points for the cleanest waves but they will be marginally smaller, as expected," he said.

Further south the same swell is expected to hit the New South Wales North Coast on Thursday producing solid waves, again with the quality limited to the protected points and southern corners.
