Pyne says support for education reforms 'overwhelming'

EDUCATION Minister Christopher Pyne has labelled the university sector's qualified support for higher education reform as "unprecedented", despite strong opposition to the government's 20% cut to student fee subsidies.

In an open letter, Universities Australia wrote to the Senate crossbench on Monday, urging them to reduce the funding cut, among other measures.

The sector also called for major changes to indexing of student loans, adjustment funds for regional universities and other changes.

Despite the caveats, Mr Pyne described the support as "overwhelming".
