WHAT does it mean to be Australian?

Is it that we give everyone a fair go, support the underdog, or help out our mates in need that makes us true Aussies?

After spending the long weekend enjoying a barbie, a few coldies and celebrating everything that makes Australia great, it's now time to show our true Aussie colours and support our mates.

It's hard to know which of our small businesses are struggling, until they shut up shop.

Small to medium-business owners are the underdogs, with large international corporations, online shopping and out of town competitors all competing for our local consumer dollar.

Local business owners are our mates, they live next door, we see them at the pub, we play sport with them, and their kids go to school with ours.

We support our mates when they need it.

So I'm putting it out there - be Australian, support a mate and buy local this week, and the following week and the one after that!

Give our mates a fair go.

Get quotes from locals and make sure your decision is based on more than just price!

And share your good local experiences.

We'd love to hear them.
