Suncorp beats big four to be bank of year
SUNCORP Bank has had a long history in regional Queensland, and last week it proved itself a genuine alternative to the Big Four by winning Money magazine's coveted Consumer Finance Bank of the Year Award.
It was the first non-major bank to receive the highly recognised consumer and industry title since the award's inception in 2004.
The Gladstone branch, at the Gladstone Central shopping area, has had a loyal following and branch manager Cheryl McDonald is proud of the achievement.
"It's exciting to not be a big four, to be a Queensland bank and to have won this award," she said.
"I think that's phenomenal...showing that there are alternatives out there who can be recognised."
Ms McDonald said Suncorp was getting more of a presence in the banking areas, but it still looked after insurance and finances.
"We have a mortgage lending manager, a financial advisor, three consultants and two tellers," she said.
Ms McDonald said the bank was going through a transition of trying to connect more with their customers while also offering increased technology options.
"Suncorp has been about community banking all along, and we're seeing great benefits," she said.
For example if someone had a fee on their account, she wanted to be able to sit down with them and look at why it was there, and see if there were changes to be made so that fee wouldn't occur again.
"We're really focussed on assisting them to help them achieve their goals," she said of Suncorp's customers.
