Stoyle in bold start for crown

DIMITY Stoyle's quest for the ASP World Junior Tour title was bolstered by her imposing performance in the opening round of the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships at Burleigh yesterday.

The Buderim talent went into the third and final event of the global series in third place in the standings, after solid showings in Indonesia and Brazil.

She dominated her round-one heat yesterday to advance easily to round three.

Stoyle posted a pair of impressive 8.50 and 8.73 rides (out of 10) to tally 17.23 points to beat Japanese duo Nao Omura (8.07) and Ren Hashimoto (6.33).

With 13 waves, she caught the pundits' eyes with her smooth style.

"I was having so much fun in that heat," Stoyle said.

"It's only small, but it's really good. I just caught so many waves because it's so hard to get waves free-surfing out here.

"I live on the Sunshine Coast, but feel at home down here on the Gold Coast because I come down a lot to visit my grandparents," she said.

Stoyle trails France's Johanne Defay and Hawaii's Leila Hurst in the tour standings but said she would claim the series title if she won at Burleigh because of bonus points awarded there.

While Hurst advanced to round three with ease by winning her opening-round heat yesterday, Defay was forced to do it the hard way.

She finished last in a non-elimination heat behind Australians Ellie-Jean Coffey and Holly-Sue Coffey, before scraping through round two by nabbing second spot.

Caloundra young gun Eli Steele, who went into the junior men's event as a wildcard, is expected to meet Brazilian Caio Ibelli in round two today after suffering defeat in a non-elimination opening-round heat on Saturday.

Steele is the Australian under-18 champion.
