Mum warns about daughter’s stolen identity nightmare

A MARYBOROUGH mum has urged others to be aware of potential dangers online after her daughter's image was stolen and used on dating websites.

The 16-year-old was alerted to a profile on one of the websites after a friend who was browsing saw the photo.

It had been taken from the girl's Instagram account and another person, under a different name, was using the photo, along with the details that they were 20 years old, single and "looking for fun".

To protect her daughter from any backlash, the mum asked that they not be named, but she posted the information to a local social media page in an effort to warn other parents.

Police have warned about criminals tracking children online and harvesting personal information in an effort to steal their identities.

One way to combat the problem was to have parents stop children from putting too many details online, enabling criminals to take out loans, create false accounts and commit crimes under someone else's name.
