Stoke loss gives United more worries

FORMER Manchester United favourite Mark Hughes heaped more misery on his old club after the Stoke City manager engineered the team's first top-flight league win over the Red Devils since 1984, and the first since the start of the English Premier League.

The 2-1 defeat was United's eighth this season, the worst since the 2003-04 campaign when it was beaten nine times and finished 13th.

Stoke's win, courtesy of a double from Charlie Adam, moved the Potters up to 11th as the bottom half of the table got even tighter.

Adam's first goal deflected off Michael Carrick before Robin van Persie equalised for United.

Adam, however, had the final say with a wonder strike to take all three points.

Wins for Cardiff, West Ham and Sunderland now mean that only eight points separate the bottom club, Fulham, from 10th-placed Aston Villa.

Cardiff beat fellow strugglers Norwich 2-1, while West Ham defeated Swansea 2-0 despite having Andy Carroll controversially sent off. Kevin Nolan scored both goals but West Ham remains in the bottom three.

Sunderland won the Tyne-Wear derby over Newcastle 3-0, Everton beat Villa 2-1, while Spurs and Hull drew 1-all.
