That takes the cake - baker's Lismore Show awards stolen

TWO recently-won trophies from the Lismore Show have been stolen from Wurlitzer Bakery's Evans Head shop in Woodburn St.

The team of local bakers came away with a swag of 27 awards from the North Coast National's bakery competition, outstripping all other competitors.

They also won Cake Exhibitor of the Show and Apprentice of the Show with some outstanding baking from their second-year apprentice Jodie Solomon.

This, however, didn't stop some "sticky fingers" taking a first and second trophy from the front counter of the shop when staff weren't looking.

"It was only days after receiving the trophies that they were stolen," co-owner Helen Aarts said.

"What would anyone else want with our trophies?"

This hasn't stopped Ms Aarts and her staff from celebrating their wins, which continue to increase each year.

"There were 812 entries and 42 categories," Ms Aarts said.

"Competitors came from as far as Brisbane to Port Macquarie."

While three of their original bakers - Sarah, Luke and Ben - were part of the team, the new members - Jodie, Leigh and Pryanka - have now made their mark as well.

"We were nervous with the new team as we had never entered with them before," Ms Aarts said.

"We were always confident in their ability."

Jodie's success as Apprentice of the Year has thrilled Ms Aarts no end.

"The bakers encouraged her and she did an absolutely brilliant job," she said. "We also want to say thanks to the locals for their consistent support."
