State selections for hockey trio
HOCKEY: There has been more selection success for three of Gladstone's brightest young prospects.
Rhiannon Baxter and Morgan Mathison have been chosen in the Queensland under-18 girls' team and Ronan McGuire was named in the boys' team.
The announcement of the teams comes following a recent three-day trial held in Brisbane's State Hockey Centre that saw 18 players and 10 shadows selected for each team from the original squad of 60 players.
The Queensland teams will now go on to prepare to compete at the Australian Boys and Girls U18 National Championships in Hobart from April 19-29.
Queensland boy's coach Aaron Harmsworth said it was the behind-the-scene preparation that has got the youngsters to where they were now.
"This is more testament to their parents and young Rhiannon Baxter and Ronan have very supportive parents who put in the hard yards with them and above all teach them discipline,” Harmsworth said.
"I know other people like Gary Porteous have also being doing their bit.”
Ronan is one of the youngest in the Queensland team and Harmsworth said he showed qualities that were rare for a striker.
"Ronan possesses some raw speed, strength on the ball and isn't afraid to put his body on the line,” Harmsworth said.
"He is always hungry to get the ball off the other players which is not always a characteristic of a striker.
"He is growing into a smarter hockey player with potential and he is only 15.
"Not too many people get picked in this team at this age, so it's a credit to him along with his Australian Schoolboys selection.”
Meanwhile the Gladstone Hockey Association pre-season Nines competition is this weekend at the Gladstone hockey fields.
It is a fast modified game with nine players on the field. Play starts at 9am on Saturday and Sunday and finishes at noon on Sunday.
Gladstone's Souths, Sparks and Meteors, as well as two sides from Rockhampton, will play.
