Start of the season to be extra vigilant due to fires

HERE it comes!

The fire season is upon us, and it's going to stick around for a while.

It's the time when we have to be prepared for anything, and we need to make sure we all look after each other and stay safe.

Fires have a nasty habit of being totally unpredictable. It just takes a change of wind direction and the whole scenario becomes lethal.

The first thing is to make sure that none of our activities have any chance of starting fire.

Cigarette butts, given the right conditions, can do the trick, as can the small rubbish fire you started to get rid of a few leaves.

The undergrowth is currently tinder-dry and it takes just a tiny spark to start what could become a devastating fire.

Our firefighters have spent weeks preparing for fires; they have back-burned as much as they can in an effort to keep our homes and businesses safe.

Now it's up to us to make sure we don't make their lives hell by not considering the consequences of our actions.
