Stanfield a standout in junior rugby league
JOEL Stanfield is the fast-running, intelligent and friendly last man in defence for the Under-14s Tannum Sands Rugby League Seagulls.
The Seagulls take on Valleys Diehards this weekend in a must-win semi-final. Seagulls were the minor premiers, but lost the first final against arch rivals Brothers last week 16-12.
If they lose this weekend they could be out of the finals without winning a game after being the best team all year.
"The whole team is ready to play this weekend. We're all pretty pumped up," said Stanfield. "It would suck to lose after winning after finishing first."
The last time they played Valleys the Seagulls won 30-20.
The 14-year-old said their attack was the best part of the Seagulls game.
"Our outside backs are really good," he said. "Our whole team goes all right.
"The biggest team in the (competition) would be Brothers.
"We have a couple of big guys in the team, but not as many. When we play them I just choose not to kick it to them."
Chris Stanfield is a trainer for the Seagulls and said his younger brother was a natural rugby league player.
"He has an ability to read the game and you can't teach that," he said.
"He can kick run, tackle and his defence is unreal."
Joel wants to play professional rugby for the Cowboys and his brother believes he can.
"Growing up in Africa and seeing the locals over there, if they set their minds to it they can achieve anything," he said.
"I've never seen him play soccer or basketball, but he stands out playing rugby."
