Stage one construction for Calliope sports precinct starts
CONSTRUCTION for stage one of the Calliope Sports Liz Cunningham Park development has started.
In April, Gladstone Regional Council awarded the civil construction and landscape contract to Golding Contracting Pty Ltd and the building contract to CCF Constructions.
Parks and Recreation portfolio spokesperson Graham McDonald said the 49 hectare park on Racecourse Road would ultimately feature two full-size football fields, a full-size cricket ground, shared clubhouse and amenities.
"Stage one involves earthworks, development of sporting fields and construction of a new sporting clubhouse with a sealed car park and gravel car/bus parking areas," Councillor McDonald said.
"The multi-purpose facility will become home to the Calliope soccer and cricket fraternities and accommodate a wide range of sporting groups in the future including netball and AFL," Cr McDonald said.
"The soccer and cricket clubs have been using Council's sporting field at Bunting Park, but once those teams move to the new sports park, the Calliope Rugby League Club will gain that field to have two playing fields."
"The new sports park will ease the over-use of Bunting Park and provide a centralised sporting hub for the Calliope community for years to come," he said.
The civil works are expected to be completed October, weather permitting, with the clubhouse and grassed fields to be ready for use by March 2016.
