Graham Stafford’s legal team to fight for report's release

GRAHAM Stafford's legal team is likely to lodge a Right to Information request to force the release of the latest report into the murder their client was jailed for.

Mr Stafford was convicted in 1992 of the murder of Ipswich schoolgirl Leanne Holland, and spent 15 years behind bars before his conviction was set aside in 2009 after he was released on parole.

A three-year police re-investigation of the 1991 murder concluded in 2012 and was followed by two independent legal assessments, but the government concluded it would take no further action.

The re-investigation was triggered by police claims new evidence had emerged. But they said recently there were no other persons of interest in the case.

One of his legal team, barrister Joe Crowley, said Mr Stafford needed to see the report. "He has been publicly accused and he has no way of publicly clearing his name," Mr Crowley said.

Mr Crowley said the report would help reveal "how they (the police) went about the re-investigation and what they looked at, and also what the new evidence is they say they came up with".

"We want an investigation to investigate how the police and the prosecutors got it so wrong in the first place," he said of the 1992 outcome.

"I'd have to take instructions from Graham, but it may be an occasion for a Freedom of Information request from the Queensland Police Service."

Mr Stafford said investigators were adamant the re-investigation would be transparent.

He rejected explanations the evidence was aging and deteriorating.

"I'm surprised, given the other cold cases that have been solved, that have been older than this, and given the advances in technology, that they could even use that as an excuse," Mr Stafford said.
