Network upgrade will boost Optus mobile service

SMARTPHONE users will have access to Optus 4G, and faster internet on the mobile phones, following upgrades currently being rolled out on the Optus mobile network in Gladstone.

The upgrades will improve mobile internet speed in new phones such as the iPhone 5, 5s and 5c, and Samsung S4 and S5, which utilise the 4G network.

An Optus spokesperson said phone and internet speed for Optus 3G users would also be improved, because congestion was slowing those services in Gladstone.

All of Optus's Gladstone network will be improved by the upgrade, which is due to take place late this year.

Calliope resident Tracy Bartlett welcomed the news, but said she wouldn't be affected because only Telstra was available at her property.

She said her main concern was the expense and convenience of internet usage, which prevented her using mobile internet services at home.

"It's very expensive and very slow," she said.

"I don't use internet on my phone, because it's so small."
