Runway reaches milestone
A MILESTONE in the multi-million-dollar upgrade to the Gladstone Airport will be reached today.
Gladstone Regional Council has funded the much-anticipated $65 million Gladstone Airport Runway Reconstruction Project, with the Federal Government spotting $5.5 million for the Gladstone Airport Terminal Upgrade.
The runway part of the airport upgrade will reach a milestone today with the commissioning of the newly extended and reconstructed Gladstone Airport runway.
The commissioning means the runway project has been completed on schedule, with council having reported in previous months that the runway was due to be completed by the end of August.
A special Qantas flight will mark the arrival of the first commercial aircraft to land without restriction on the newly extended runway. The project involved the extension of the runway from 1635 metres to 1965 metres.
Jet aircraft operations will not take place until the end of the year after passenger and baggage security upgrades are completed.
