Souths hold on to narrowly avoid becoming another victim

PREMIER South Sydney narrowly escaped becoming another major shock loser in a round of NRL upsets against a plucky Penrith.

After the scores were locked at 12-all at half time, the Rabbitohs scraped home 20-16 to set up a blockbuster against a rejuvenated Manly next weekend.

Souths centre Dylan Walker's 67th-minute converted try gave them a 20-12 buffer, but Panthers veteran Lewis Brown set the scene for a thrilling finish when he crashed over wide out after some brilliant play by Jamie Soward and Bryce Cartwright, who had scored earlier to keep Penrith in the fight.

The win kept Souths just ahead of Cronulla in the battle for fourth place.

Earlier, St George-Illawarra climbed back into the top eight when they snapped a seven-game losing streak against Newcastle. The Knights were hoping to give club great Danny Buderus a dream debut as coach after replacing Rick Stone during the week.

After trailing 10-0 early, the Knights looked like producing another upset when they raced to a 20-14 half time lead, before the Dragons ran out 46-24 winners.

Dragons five-eighth Gareth Widdop continued his remarkable goal kicking at Jubilee Oval, his nine-from-nine with the boot taking his tally in four games at the Wollongong ground to a perfect 36 straight.

Teammate Leeson Ah Mau could be in hot water with the judiciary after a nasty high shot which rocked Knights forward Kade Snowden in the first half.
