Socceroos miss top spot after loss to South Korea

THE Socceroos endured a frustrating 1-0 loss to South Korea in Brisbane on Saturday night to miss out on topping Group A at the Asian Cup.

A 32nd minute goal from Lee Jung-hyub was enough to give the Taeguk Warriors the points, meaning South Korea will play the runners-up in Group B in the quarter-finals.

Australia's second-place finish means it will likely play Group B leaders China in the last eight, but opens up the prospect of facing rivals Japan in the semi-finals if the hosts get through.

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou pulled a few surprises, with attacking players Tim Cahill, Tommy Oar and Robbie Kruse left on the bench.

It was a tight contest throughout, with Australia having more possession and shots on target, but lacking the final ball or the right finish to take advantage.
