SOAP BOX: It’s time to de-fancy playgrounds

HERE'S a message to the people who are designing future playgrounds for shopping centres - the old- fashioned swing and slide is definitely not dead.

While I admire your desire to branch out and incorporate stylish, modern and dazzling pieces of art into play spaces, some of the objects I have seen in Brisbane and even on the Sunshine Coast would be more at home in an art gallery.

They may be designed for entertainment, but the funny thing is that the children have absolutely no idea what to do with them!

At a recent visit to Chermside, we ducked to an outdoor play area -and I use that term loosely - and were greeted with large, embossed metallic structures, giant metal eggs and a few stairs with some spaced-out wood in an arch over the top.

My two-year-old scrambled up one of the eggs and sat on it, becoming a giant chicken.

It was enough to make us all laugh, but the novelty wore off after about two minutes.

The play centre in the revamped Kawana Shoppingworld has some interactive computer games, but the glossy whale tail and tunnel placed in there as climbing objects are a little puzzling.

Sure, they look great. But how many toddlers do you think would face-plant off the super slippery peak of the whale each day?

It's time to get back to basics. Every child knows how to use a slide and even a set of simple wooden blocks or plastic toys would be more engaging and useful to young minds.
