Territorial snake holes up to protect nest at Webb Park

BEWARE - there is one determined snake at Webb Park.

The Gladstone Regional Council has filled in its holes but it has dug them back out.

And it pokes its head out at passers-by.

Therapy worker Nicki Truskett has come face-to-face with the reptile recently near the park's table and chairs.

"I love snakes but it's your worst nightmare seeing one so territorial outside its nest, so close to people and dogs," she said.

Ms Truskett immediately called a council worker to investigate but the council was unsuccessful in contacting a snake catcher.

The council worker filled the holes under the slab with dirt but the temporary fix was no match for the snake.

"By Thursday morning the holes were back," Ms Truskett said.

"I've tried to warn people as they come in but there's only so much you can do."

Ms Truskett said from now on she would carry snake bandages at all times.

"It can take minutes for the venom of a bite to affect you," she said.

"You can buy a snake-bite kit for about $25 off the internet, which is an essential here."

The sighting was metres from Mark Shephardson's snake-ridden property, which The Observer reported about on Thursday.

The council was unable to provide a comment due to a shortage of staff.
