Slipper lawyer demands AFP investigate Brough over admission
PETER Slipper's lawyer in the James Ashby saga has called for the Australian Federal Police to step up its investigation into Mal Brough.
Simon Berry told the Daily late last night Mr Brough's admissions in the explosive 60 Minutes interview warranted the AFP to continue its probe.
Mr Brough admitted to reporter Liz Hayes he had asked Mr Slipper's staff to photograph the former Speaker's diary.
The Member for Fisher said he was doing this for the sake of the electorate he would later represent.
However, Mr Berry said this was the role of police, not Mr Brough.
"Mr Brough's startling admission is a matter that should be taken up by police," he said.
He also revealed Mr Ashby, who dropped his sexual harassment case against Mr Slipper in June, has filed for costs in this case from Mr Slipper and the Commonwealth.
Questions arise as to whether Mr Ashby, who clearly admitted he had been offered a future job in the government and to have his legal fees waived, may now be guilty of perjury.
As shown on 60 Minutes, Mr Ashby signed legal paperwork claiming he undertook the proceedings without any offer of any incentive.
However, he claimed on the show Education Minister Christopher Pyne and Member for Longman Wyatt Roy had said he would have a future job and financed lawyer.
"It will be up to the wording of the documents," Mr Berry said.
"If it is a breach, then it would be up to a criminal court."
The AFP suspended its initial investigation into Mr Brough, filed by former Labor MP Graham Perrett, pending the outcome of the Ashby appeal.
It is unclear what happened to this investigation and Mr Brough has since won Mr Slipper's former seat of Fisher.
Mr Slipper is facing sentencing later this month after being found guilty in the ACT Magistrates Courts of misusing his parliamentary entitlements of less than $1000.
