Skippers says it's a learning curve for his team

RUGBY UNION: While the Gladstone Rugby Union Goats senior side are in the off-season break, several local junior teams are competing among in the summer season.

While the pro bull riders were doing their thing at the adjacent Marley Brown Oval, four young Goats teams were just as physical at the Briffney Junior Fields.

The Goats under-17 side's captain Dylan Johnson says despite his team losing 29-12 against Rockhampton Brothers, there are some positive signs.

"We had a good game, but we just need to learn how to defend," Dylan said.

"We have a lot of new players coming up from the under-15 side from last year."

Dylan began playing union five years ago and enjoys the physical side of it after coming from a league background.

"There's no limit in tackles in union and in the ruck as well," he said. "The scrums are a lot better."

Dylan's young men take on a powerful Frenchville side next Saturday in Gladstone.

It was a narrow loss for the under-15 side where a combined Brothers Colts team won 15-10.

The under-13 Goats team combined with Rockhampton Brothers, but found the going tough against Rocky Colts to lose 51-0. However, Goats-Brothers' coach Dave O'Brien said his players stuck at it.

"The positives for me are that the basics like cleaning out and contesting the ball are fundamentals that the players are learning," O'Brien said.

"We are a new side and it's something to build on for the rest of the season."

Jakayla Docherty made an impressive debut for the Goats' in the Rockhampton-based under-11 Pathways Friday nights. Despite losing coach Ben Leis said she stood out with her committed tackling.
