'Evil' man jailed for child rape
A 32-year-old Calliope man has been jailed for six years for what the judge deemed revolting and evil behaviour.
The man, who cannot be identified, pleaded guilty to six counts of rape, two of indecent treatment of a child and one of maintaining an unlawful relationship with a child.
The offences occurred over a three-and-a-half-year period between May 2006 and November 2009 when the child was aged between seven and 10.
The defendant was in a relationship with the child's mother and looked after her while the mother was working.
It was alleged the defendant would blindfold the child and then get the child to perform sexual acts on him.
He threatened the child with a knife and told her he would cut her arm off if she told anyone and also promised to buy her something nice if she didn't tell.
“This is an outrageous and disgraceful breach of trust,” Crown prosecutor Shaun Gordon said.
“He was an avid watcher of pornography and was morbidly obese and bedridden to a mattress on the lounge room floor watching pornography which he became obsessed with,” barrister David Murray said.
“It was despicable and demeaning acts that were to satisfy your own sexual lust,” Judge Tutt said.
“You destroyed the child's innocence and society is repulsed by your conduct, no normal adult behaves like that,” he said.
“Molestation of children is abhorrent to a civilised community and your evil criminality exploits those who can't defend themselves.”
The man was sentenced to six years jail for maintaining an unlawful relationship with a child, five years jail each for the six rape charges and three years jail each for indecent treatment of a child, all to be served concurrently.
“If it was up to me as an individual I would double your sentence but unfortunately I am bound by guidelines,” Judge Tutt said.
