Driver caught six times over limit on Hervey Bay Esplanade

HERVEY Bay police are angry and frustrated after a driver returned a reading more than six times the legal limit in a routine breath test.

The 59-year-old man was pulled over on the Esplanade at Torquay about 8.30pm on Wednesday and returned a BAC reading of 0.311.

Hervey Bay Sergeant Paul Jervis said it was frustrating that people were still not getting the message.

He agreed it was one of the highest readings police had seen.

Sgt Jervis said there was no reason for people to continue to drink and drive.

"There are just so many alternatives available," he said.

"Get a cab, get a mate to drive, get Dial a Driver."

He said the message not to drink and drive was well and truly out in the community.

"There are no excuses. It gets that much publicity."

Sgt Jervis acknowledged it was alarming for the public to know people were continuing to get behind the wheel of their cars while intoxicated.

But he said one positive outcome from the arrest was that it was a clear sign to the public that police were on the roads and offenders would be caught.

"It's good for people to see the police are out there, picking these people up," he said.

"You've got to be crazy to drive under the influence."

The man will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on August 21.
