Sir David’s Aussie jewel needs swift action to survive

ENVIRONMENTALISTS want efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions ramped up to protect the Great Barrier Reef from the impacts of fossil fuel burning.

The reef, which is one of television naturalist Sir David Attenborough's favourite places in the world, is under threat from mass coral bleaching triggered by record-breaking ocean heat.

The Climate Council's Tim Flannery said yesterday that governments needed to take more action to protect the natural wonder.

"It is critical that the federal and Queensland governments clearly understand the link between accelerating climate change and accelerating damage to the reef," he said.

"The Great Barrier Reef is not only one of the seven wonders of the natural world - it also supports 69,000 jobs in Queensland."

Noni Austin, an Australian lawyer at Earthjustice, said the Australian Government had added "insult to injury" by approving a coal export terminal expansion at Abbot Point and the Carmichael coalmine in the Galilee Basin.
