WATCH: Single mum makes a public challenge to Prime Minister
A SINGLE mother has challenged Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in a very public moment during the tightly planned election campaign.
The mother, who identified herself as Melinda approached the Prime Minister at the end of a media conference and put forward her concerns over education opportunities.
Fairfax reported Melinda approached Mr Turnbull as he was leaving an engineering company in Moorabbin outside Melbourne and said parents in the area were left disadvantaged because some could not provide the same opportunities others could.
In videos recorded by the media scrum around the Prime Minister, Melinda can be heard questioning him on the government's move to change family tax benefits.
She told Prime Minister Turnbull that her son, now in Year 10, was told to only choose school subjects the family were able to afford.
"The cost of schooling is going up and up and up and yet we're not getting any more money. Now you're going to take the family tax benefits away," she said.
Melinda's comments have gained national attention and a response from Mr Turnbull.
He asked Melinda her son's name and told her he wanted nothing more than a good education for them.
"Education can be transformative," he said.
