IT'S taken 16 years for Gladstone to field a representative girls' softball team.
And now that there's a side of talented players to fill the void, Softball Gladstone is breathing a sigh of relief.
The under-15 girls are not fazed by the enormity of the task ahead.
They are excited about playing representative softball - and it will be the first time for a handful of players.
Coached by Merv Downing, the expectations are not sky high.
Downing is keen on aiming at the President's Cup for what becomes the second tier of the 13-team under-15 state championships.
"I believe this team is good enough to finish in the top five," he said.
"All but two of these girls will be back next year so we are aiming at the President's Cup, which is between fifth and sixth.
"This is the first time for 16 years Gladstone has sent a girls' team."
The girls were presented with their hats, shirts and the rest of their kit by Gladstone mayor Gail Sellers on Monday
Cr Sellers was just as keen as the officials to see a team back on the diamond
"Have a good carnival, I hope it is incident- and injury-free," she said.
The girls travel to Toowoomba for the championships from Saturday until Monday.
