First year Diwali festival is open to public

THEY live far from their home country, but Bhavin Maheta is making sure his children still know and celebrate the Indian culture.

The Indian Cultural Community Group president organised the weekend's Diwali Indian Cultural Fiesta.

The fiesta, a celebration of light, had more than 300 people recognising and learning traditional Indian culture.

"What we are doing in Gladstone is celebrating as much as possible the Indian festivals," Mr Maheta said.

Last year the group hosted 14 Indian festival events.

This was the first year the festival was open to all of the public.
