She’s always their mum of year

‘MOTHER of the year’ has a special ring to it, and a special mum with a big heart is in the running to take out a Queensland award for her efforts.

Down to the final three in the Barnados Queensland Mother of the Year, Charmaine Mann got a huge shock when a quiet family dinner turned into a mini-award ceremony.

Daughters Emma Brackley and Larrena presented their mother with certificates and the simple words which summed up the family’s feelings.

“They said ‘We love you, Mum, and that’s why we did it’,” she said.

“I was overwhelmed and just cried.”

A modest Mrs Mann feels she did “nothing spectacular” to deserve the honour.

“I’m just a mum,” she said, humbly.

Having raised four boys; Sammuel, Matthew, Natthan and Jerremy, plus two girls; Emma and Larrena, Mrs Mann described the parenting years.

“It’s a bit like riding a rollercoaster, you just get on and hold on,” she laughed.

Ms Brackley said her mother is a “real live angel”.

“My mother is an amazing woman with amazing patience and love for everyone regardless of who they are, where they come from or what their situation,” Ms Brackley said.

The Barnados Queensland Mother of the Year final will be held on March 31 in Brisbane and Mrs Mann is going to the presentation with no doubt what will happen if her name is called out.

“I think I’ll cry — guaranteed.”
