OUR SAY: Share ride drivers feel the heat

IT IS difficult to feel too sorry for Uber drivers now finding the realities of the personal transport industry are tougher than they first assumed.

Uber and UberX and their drivers came into the marketplace with the offer they would be cheaper and provide better and timelier service than the regulated taxi industry.

There was no thought for the impact on competition that was more heavily regulated and carried higher fixed costs.

Those who go into any industry or business without their eyes wide open and with an awareness of the risks are always likely to struggle.

Uber's strategy is to build volume through discounting in a bid to not only reduce downtime for its drivers but also over time increase its market share which would ultimately then see its fares rise.

UberX driver Heather Marc, who agreed to speak on the record with the Sunshine Coast Daily, gets it.

She says fare cuts have made it tough but as third-party contractors "if you're not happy, it's up to you which way you jump".

And that effectively sums up Uber's attitude towards the taxi industry when it entered the market.
