Sex offender fined for using email for dating

A CONVICTED child sex offender has been fined $750 in Maryborough Magistrates Court for using an email address to access dating websites.

The court heard the man had failed to comply with the conditions set out by the Child Sex Offender Register, which required him to report any use of an email address or social media sites within seven days.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will be subject to reporting conditions for 15 years.

On checking the man's phone, police found a Gmail account that had multiple emails from dating websites.

Defence lawyer Travis George said his client had overlooked telling the police about the email address.

Mr George said the offence was on the lower scale as he had not been in contact with children or accessing illegal websites.

He said his client was in the process of moving from Tinana to Kingaroy and police would be notified.

The court heard the man had been convicted of a similar offence against the reporting law in October last year.
