Ipswich sex offender back in jail for rape of young girl

A REPORTABLE sex offender, previously convicted of attempted rape, has been thrown in jail for raping an eight-year-old girl.

The Ipswich man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had been a trusted family friend of the girl.

The 28-year-old had been watching movies in bed with the victim when he digitally raped her.

The man appeared in the dock at Ipswich District Court this week to plead guilty to the charge.

Crown prosecutor Dzenita Balic said the victim told the man to stop, but that he ignored her pleas.

She described the rape as "brazen" as it took place while the victim's young sister was in the room and also while other adults were about the house.

Ms Balic said the offending had had a traumatic effect on the victim and her family.

She also noted the man had previously been convicted of attempted rape in 2007, for which he was given a jail sentence.

Defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough said his client was remorseful for his actions.

Before he was brought into Ipswich Court, the man had spent 203 days in jail awaiting a final verdict and sentence for this offence.

During his time in custody, Mr Fairclough said his client had been working as a cleaner.

Mr Fairclough said the man was hoping to find employment and make something of his life once released from prison.

He said before his client was released he would "undoubtedly" have to undertake a sex offender treatment program and any other necessary intervention programs.

"He'll have to jump through the hoops before he is likely to be released on parole," Mr Fairclough said.

Judge Deborah Richards said she was concerned about the man's risk of re-offending, given his prior conviction for attempted rape.

"It's clear you shouldn't be released from prison until the authorities are satisfied there won't be any further re-offending from you again," she told the man.

The man was sentenced to three and a half years in jail. He will be eligible for parole after serving 15 months behind bars.
