OPINION: Sunny days...Sesame Street turns 45
I CAN remember as a child watching Sesame Street all the time without once realising I was being educated in some of life's most fundamental areas.
The Count taught me to count before any teacher got a hold of me and Big Bird was busy teaching us all to be aware and safety conscious in our daily tasks.
Even the bad apple of the bunch Oscar the Grouch taught us the negatives of not sharing food and happiness.
And who can forget the cookie monster? Well he just taught me how fantastic cookies were but I probably didn't need encouragement in that department.
Only a couple of years ago researchers out of the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that exposure to Sesame Street made quite a significant difference in a number of children's learning outcomes including cognitive skills, learning about the world, and social reasonings and attitudes.
The study showed an 11.6 percentile difference between viewers and non-viewers.
Yesterday's episode on ABC Kids marks the beginning of the 45th anniversary season on Australian television. Here's hoping they can continue to teach Aussie kids for another 45. Sunny days...
