Serve of inspiration
TANNUM Sands Tennis Association players were given a real serve on Tuesday night and they loved every minute of it.
The 2010 Central region Exhibition Tour paid a visit to the club.
Facilitated by community tennis officer Ken Hick, the afternoon included a coaching clinic for juniors followed by two exhibition matches.
Tannum Sands Tennis Association’s Alison Bird said the juniors enjoyed the experience and Mal Anderson, a tennis icon and hall-of-famer, put the kids through their paces.
“The groups were split into beginner, intermediate and advanced and the age groups ranged from six to 16,” Bird said.
“The kids really enjoyed the coaching drills and had a fun time.
“I think it gives them more of an awareness of tennis and seeing the players gives them some inspiration.”
Gavin Van Peperzeel and Andrew Donaldson, two up-and-coming tennis players, helped out with the clinic before putting on the exhibition match, which was won by Van Peperzeel and watched by the majority of the juniors.
“They spoke really well with the kids, were easy to talk to and answered questions and signed autographs,” Bird said.
Bird said having the clinic was a real bonus for the juniors.
“When you’re out in the region and don’t get the opportunities that exist in the city, it’s a good chance for the kids to see where they’ve (the players) come from,” Bird said.
