Gladstone man convicted of raping eight-year-old

A JURY has taken more than eight hours to find a Gladstone man guilty of raping and molesting his then partner's granddaughter.

But the man, 52, who cannot be named in order to protect the child's identity, was found not guilty on one rape and two indecent treatment charges he faced.

However, the jury indicated they could not reach a unanimous verdict on one of the indecent treatment charges and were given the option of returning a majority verdict, which is allowed under Queensland law.

Justice Fleur Kingham allowed the jury a further 30 minutes to see if they could reach a verdict on the charge.

After a short deliberation the jury returned and advised the court they had reached a majority not guilty verdict of 11-1 in relation to the final indecent treatment charge.

The man, who was previously on bail, was placed into custody ahead of his sentencing hearing today.

He pleaded not guilty in the Brisbane District Court this week to two rape and three molestation offences stemming from interactions with the then eight-year-old girl between June 16 and August 23 last year.

The offending took place during an overnight car trip from Brisbane to Gladstone after the man helped the child's mother relocate to the region to be closer to her mother, who was his partner.

The court was played a recorded interview conducted at Rockhampton Police Station in August last year where the girl outlined to investigators what had occurred during the car trip.

She said the man placed his left hand beneath her underwear while he was driving and started to wriggle his fingers inside and outside, referring to her vagina and anus, before telling the girl what they had done was beautiful.
