Sellers wants the top job

THE Chinese whispers are starting to turn into plain Gladstone gossip when it comes to the race for Gladstone mayor.

Currently acting Mayor Cr Gail Sellers is the only person to throw her hat into the electoral ring with constant hearsay and speculation mounting as to who will take her on.

Yesterday, The Observer received credible information that someone prominent in the Gladstone community was about to announce they would contest the vacancy.

However, by close of business yesterday the person failed to make a bid, raising speculation as to if Cr Sellers will have any opposition.

Last week, reliable sources pointed the finger at Cr Craig Butler as seriously considering throwing his hat into the ring, however Cr Butler is still to come forward.

If the acting mayor is unopposed, Cr Sellers will take the mayoral position without an election.

Many councillors supported Cr Sellers as the lone candidate because it would mean ratepayers’ money would not be spent on voters having to go to the polls.

Other names being bandied about include former Federal Member for Flynn Chris Trevor, Len Smith, president of Gladstone Area Promotion and Development Limited (GAPDL) Peter Corones and GAPDL chief executive officer Glenn Churchill.
