'Secret' corals reefs on our doorstep
IT'S amazing how many people living on the Sunshine Coast are not aware of the beautiful coral reefs that lie just off the coastline.
People who travel to the Great Barrier Reef can easily see the colourful reefs from the surface.
At low tide much of the reef is exposed and many people have participated in interesting guided reef walks.
This is not the case on the Sunshine Coast.
Here, all the reefs are submerged - even at low tide.
To see coral reefs on the Sunshine Coast, you need to snorkel over the reefs.
This can be a hit-and-miss affair because there are few places where the reefs are shallow enough to be seen from the surface.
Water clarity just a kilometre or two off the coast is much less clearer than out on the Great Barrier Reef. If underwater visibility is less than 10m, it is near-impossible to see the corals.
So the only way left to explore the magnificent reefs which lie just off our coast is to scuba dive.
