Seagulls swoop to snatch share of points against Wallabys

WALLABYS and Tannum Sands have been forced to share the premiership points after an anticlimactic finish to their A-grade clash.

Momentum switched throughout the match and both sides will rue missed chances and ill-discipline after playing out a 30-all draw.

Numerous penalties and handling errors marred the match, making it a difficult encounter for the crowd watch.

Tannum Sands started the better, scoring in the opening minute after Sam Herbert knocked on from the kick-off.

The two sides then exchanged tries before Wallabys skipped clear but Seagulls' Ray Mercy crossed just before the break to narrow the gap to 18-14.

Wallabys looked on track to wrap up the match when they stretched their lead to 30-14 in the second half but penalties and poor ball control allowed Seagulls to draw level.

"That comes down to discipline, it is one of the fundamentals of the game," Mercy said.

"We went alright, we are still improving and we need to focus on basics."

Mercy was a key figure for Seagulls, finishing with a try-scoring double and spending time in the sin bin for his part in a scuffle.

Centre Joe Richards was among those to impress for Wallabys, crossing for a hat-trick of tries.

While pleased to have escaped with a premiership point, Richards said Wallabys had played poorly and would need to improve if they are to challenge competition frontrunners Brothers and Valleys.

"We need to work on our defence," Richards said.
