TANNUM SANDS Seagulls' half back Jason Brechin had a limited preseason and did not even play last year due to the birth of his child, but he did not miss a beat on Saturday night.

Brechin was pivotal in the Seagulls' pulsating 26-18 win against Gladstone Valleys as he set up plays with clever off-loads and kicks.

There was another reason why this win was significant.

"We only had 12 players for 60 minutes and it was a very tough game," an exhausted Brechin said.

"We broke the game open up in the middle of the ground, but it wasn't the prettiest win."

Burly Sione Tongia converted three goals while Tim Harradine completed a terrific match with two tries.

Brechin, Levili Leilua and Faleniko Leila also put through tries.

"Our forwards played well and they had most of the momentum in the second half," Brechin said.

Valleys' Ha'Ofanga Rabakewa kept his team in the hunt with a try as did Algon Cowgoo and Emiel Tea while David West slotted three conversions.

Tannum also won the B grade 24 to 10, but Valleys made it one from three after it defeated Seagulls 28 to 20 in the under 20 match.

Ben Ryan was best afield with a try
