Part-time scorer to face big Test at the Gabba

CALOUNDRA'S Rodd Palmer is at the centre of the cricket universe.

Not bad for a bloke who has spent his career keeping score for Sunshine Coast's part-timers.

The 40-year-old will make his international Test debut this morning when he keeps score for Australia's match against India at the Gabba.

It is a dream come true for the popular Coast official, whose career began in a Caloundra backyard 27 years ago when he was keeping score for his 11-year-old neighbours.

"Scoring in a Test match is all I've ever wanted to achieve - I couldn't ask for more," Mr Palmer said yesterday.

While the cameras will be fixed on the exploits of Australian stars such as David Warner and Mitchell Johnson and their Indian counterparts, Mr Palmer will go about his work anonymously.

He is tasked with keeping record of every run scored, every ball faced and all the minor details that will go into the game's history books.

It is an absorbing task spending six hours at peak concentration, paying attention to details that escape even the most observant fan.

"You like to think you are adding to the history of the game," Mr Palmer said.

"It keeps you sharp, paying attention to everything that is happening on a cricket field over a six-hour period," he said.

While it can be draining, the job has some obvious perks.

Mr Palmer's office is in one of the best spots at the Gabba, wedged between radio and television commentary booths and executive suites.

"I love cricket and to be able to see the highest level of cricket is just an absolute honour," he said.

"Hopefully, they go out there and both teams play well and score lots of runs."
