Scary details of UFC champ’s health revealed

SCARY details have emerged about the condition of Australian UFC champ Robert Whittaker's health.

A week ago Whittaker sensationally pulled out of his scheduled middleweight title defence fight against Luke Rockhold at UFC 221, to be held in Perth next month.

The reason cited was unspecified injuries.

But now UFC boss Dana White has revealed the true extent of the battle facing Whittaker.

White told TSN on Sunday it is actually a staph infection in Whittaker's stomach that's giving the middleweight champ grief.

White gave some grizzly details and revealed the sickening extent of the illness.

"He had staph infection in his stomach," White said.

"From what I understand it wasn't treated properly and started to eat away at parts of his organs.

"He's in serious condition, so it's going to be a minute before he's back, I think.

"Hopefully it turns around quick, but that stuff is life threatening if not treated the right way."

White would not speculate about a possible return date for Whittaker, who faces a fight of a different kind away from the octagon.

Whittaker won the interim middleweight title by beating Yoel Romero at UFC 213 in July, then became the undisputed champion when Georges St-Pierre vacated the belt in December.

He was to defend his title on home soil at Perth Arena on February 21.

Romero has stepped up to fight Luke Rockhold for the interim belt.
