Scandal at school prompts cops’ call

CHILD Protection Unit police have urged the public to report any concerns over vulnerable children following a scandal which has shaken a private Sunshine Coast School.

Detective Senior Sergeant Phil Hurst said information was crucial when it came to child safety.

"I can confirm we are investigating the incident at Sunshine Coast Grammar after the school referred this to us," he said.

"This is an indication that across all areas across society that people may be offending against children.

"We urge anyone with any concerns related to child protection issues to come forward."

In a letter to parents sent Thursday afternoon, Sunshine Coast Grammar School principal Maria Woods said a male staff member had resigned over allegations of serious misconduct involving a past Year 12 student.

The Child Protection Investigation Unit is investigating the incident which occurred in 2008, but Det Snr Sgt Hurst could not comment further on the case.

Sunshine Coast Grammar fielded calls into the night on Thursday and again yesterday from concerned parents.

Mrs Wood said in the interests of privacy the student's gender, staff member's position and nature of the misconduct could not be discussed.

"The response from parents has been overwhelmingly supportive," Mrs Woods said.

"Our primary focus is to ensure the ongoing welfare of our students, whilst ensuring that the importance of their education is not unduly disrupted by the process as it continues.

She said that from Grammar's perspective, students' learning environment was of paramount importance.
