Samsung's $649 phone with water resistance

Samsung has unveiled a new budget offering for the Australian market.
Samsung has unveiled a new budget offering for the Australian market.

SAMSUNG is out to win a new generation of fans with a phone that promises to survive everything from the beach to the nightclub while taking great selfies.

The Galaxy A5 will sell for $649 and Galaxy A7 $799 and will be available from next Thursday from the Samsung Online store (www.samsung.com.au) and from telcos and retailers at a later date.

Richard Fink, Samsung Australia's mobile VP, said he believed the mid-range phones would appeal to young people as well as business fleet buyers not willing to pay for premium models like the Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge.

He admitted Samsung probably did not cater for that segment of the market as well as it could have last year but this year's range offered a lot of potential for up to one third of Samsung sales.

The Note 7 battery disaster meant 2016 was not the year Samsung wanted but Mr Fink said despite the worldwide recall, most customers stuck with the brand.

About 75% of those asked to give back their Note 7 switched to a Samsung Galaxy S7.

Mr Fink was tight-lipped on the new flagship phoned to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, but said he was confident it would win rave reviews.

On the A5 and A7, he said the mid range phones offered many features customers had only seen in premium range phones, including metallic finishes, glass backing, water and dust resistance, great back and front cameras.

The phones feature front and rear 16-megapixel cameras, promising fast autofocus, vibrant and clear photos and selfies, even in low-light conditions.

Taking selfies is particularly easy thanks to a clever user interface and facial recognition.

You can touch anywhere on the screen to easily snap a high-resolution selfie with the floating camera button and use the display as a front flash for bright pictures.

You can swipe to quickly change modes or instant filters to activate picture effects.

Users can leverage modes such as the food mode, to help optimise photos and enhance the colour of images.

The range was launched at CES 2017 - the huge consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.

Mr Fink said he believed the phone was the first mid range phone on the Australian market offering water resistance, something he described as a 'mandatory' feature for Australians, given their love of the water.

The phone has an ip68 rating which means it can withstand 1.5 metres of water for up to 30 minutes. It is not recommended for swimming with, however.

"We think that customers expect or demand water resistance for our lifestyle,'' he said.

The Galaxy A Series has up to 32GB onboard storage (with up to 22GB user accessible memory on the A7 and up to 23.1GB on the A5), as well as expandable storage with microSD support up to 256GB.

It has USB Type-C port for faster data transfer and quick charging but also has a headphone jack, unlike the new iPhone 7.

Mr Fink says a 30 minute charge will power the phone for several hours while an hour will mean it is almost at full capacity.

It also features Always on Display so users can quickly glance at the time and calendar without waking up the device, helping to save time and battery.

The phone also supports Samsung Pay and Samsung Cloud to back up data and images
