Sam and friends shine in the theatre spotlight

IT was a night of glitz and glamour at Gladstone State High School on Friday as Sam Thompson wowed his audience with strong vocals and exuberant stage presence.

The show, Up in Lights - A Night of Song, Drama and Drag featured Sam and a number of supporting acts taking the stage in various costumes and characters.

Sam sang and danced his way through a variety of routines, a sure indication that the former Gladstone State High School student is set to go places in the future.

In one segment, decked out in full drag, Sam paused to ask his grandma what she thought of his get-up - an aside that drew an uproar of laughter from his audience.

During the show Sam's father spoke enthusiastically of his talented son, who has dreams of being a professional actor.

"I'm very, very proud of him," he said.

The show was also a farewell for Sam, who left Gladstone the next day to continue his studies in Victoria.

The 17-year-old is doing a three-year degree in fine arts and musical theatre.
