SWIMMING: Sally Vagg is another one of those multi-talented Gladstone youngsters who are making their way in their chosen sports.

She is the latest in a series of Yaralla Sports Club Junior Sports Star of the Year nominees and has pocketed $500 in cash for her troubles.

"I am going use the money to pay for the fees to attend the Pacific School Games that will be held in Adelaide later in the year,” Sally said.

Sally has enjoyed a stellar season in the pool and the Boyne Tannum Bullets Swimming Club athlete has won numerous medals across a range of events throughout the year.

She said she has been focusing on several different aspects of swimming.

"I have been working hard on my race starts, breaststroke to improve my individual medley time and catch and pull for butterfly, which is my favourite stroke,” Sally said.

Other than winning medals, Sally told the Observer there was another highlight when she met an Australian Olympian.

"Attending the school and club state champs, at which I was lucky enough to win some medals, I also got to meet Cam McEvoy,” Sally said.

Sally's swimming journey began when she was encouraged by a friend.

"I have always loved being in the water and my good friend Tiffany started swimming with the Boyne Tannum Bullets, so I tagged along with her and loved it,” Sally said.

Someone who arrived at the club towards the end of last year has also made a huge difference to her.

"My coach, Kate Bell, because she makes training hard but fun,” Sally said.

"Also the club president, Mr Gibbons.”

Juggling sport and school can be tricky but Sally finds a way.

"During summer I train five times a week, which is about nine hours,” she said.

Out of the water, Sally is more than competent in other sports.

"I also play netball, cricket, softball and school soccer,” she said.

"But I am definitely best at swimming.”
