Saints push the very best

AUSSIE RULES: Yeppoon Swans showed why it's a champion team with a fighting nine-point win against a gallant BITS Saints at BITS Oval on Saturday.

With a massive crowd in a Past Players Day along with the unveiling of the new clubrooms, the Saints came to play and pushed Swans all the way in a game marked with a minute's silence to honour the late club life-member Geoff Humberstone before the game.

A late final quarter goal to James Malone iced the game 7.12 (54) to BITS' 6.9 (45).

A point separated the teams in the first three breaks and with the Saints ahead by the slimmest of margins at three-quarter-time - and with a big home crowd behind it - an upset loomed.

Recruit Sam Pierpoint pounced on a quick centre clearance for his second goal to put BITS ahead 45-44 mid-way of the final term.

Saints playing coach Jake Mostert was proud of his team's efforts, but he rued at errors made at key moments. And like the champion team Yeppoon is, it made the hosts pay.

"They were probably the only real two errors all day, so that hurts considering they only got on top of us by a goal and a bit," he said.

Defender Grady Gill was superb on star Swan Jake King, captain Steve Pugh continued his great start to the season and Brendan Clark and Jacob Mills were strong in their stints in the ruck against gun Jamie Garner.

Clarke booted the first major of the match - from an acute angle - in front of the faithful and a gutsy smother from Pierpoint set the crowd roaring.

"It could have been anyone's game and credit to Yeppoon and the reason they won the game is because of their midfield really," Mostert said.

He was referring to best afield Brad "Noodles" Richards who gathered possessions at will and at important moments to send his team forward.

"Those short chip kicks just through the midfield and were prepared to go short which is what we're doing as well," Mostert added.

"I though both teams did that quite well, but I just thought that on occasions we were a little bit forgiving in getting back in defence and they took their short kicks up the middle whereas we took our short kicks a little bit wider."

Mostert said that's an area to tidy up in coming games.

Other highlights of the game were Mills' terrific mark between two Swans in the third quarter and earlier, Jake Gallagher (three goals) pulled down a one-handed mark ahead of his second goal at that time.

Yeppoon coach Mark Wallin said the win - aside of the premierships - was the most satisfying in his tenure.

"A bit of luck prevailed and both sides deserved to win no doubt about it and ironically the last time we did lose was a game against BITS probably three years ago," he said.

"There were stages through the day that we though we were heading down the same pathway.

"That's probably the best game of footy I've been involved in since I have been coaching and that's what we come here to play footy for - games like that."
