Sacking a Roar deal for Mulvey?

FORMER Netherlands international Frans Thijssen is reportedly in line to replace Mike Mulvey as head coach of the Brisbane Roar.

The club's managing director Sean Dobson confirmed late in the afternoon - several hours after media outlets began reporting that Mulvey faced the sack - that the man who led the Roar to the A-League double last season had stepped down effective immediately, but gave no reasons for the decision.

"Head coach Mike Mulvey met with Brisbane Roar FC management today. As a result, he will step down from the head coach's position," Dobson said.

"Brisbane Roar FC thanks Mike Mulvey for his contribution to the success of the club since his appointment as interim coach in December 2012, and as Brisbane Roar head coach in February 2013."

Mulvey was put on notice earlier this month by club chairman Chris Fong after a 3-1 home loss to Melbourne City, which left the team 0-4 and last on the ladder.

The Roar then opened its account with a 4-0 away win against Newcastle, but was beaten 1-0 by Melbourne Victory on Friday night.

Thijssen, the English footballer of the year in 1980/81, has managed various European teams, but has not held a senior-team coaching role since 2001.
