SA-style bottle recycling scheme for Qld?

A SOUTH Australian-style refund scheme for bottles and cans could be on its way to Queensland.

The recycling incentive scheme has long divided opinion among the state's 77 councils and continued to do so in debate over a proposed introduction moved by Cook Shire Council at the Local Government Association of Queensland meeting in Mackay on Wednesday.

The motion was narrowly carried following a vote by conference delegates, meaning the LGAQ will now lobby the State Government for the change.

Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott said such a scheme would aid regional and remote councils who simply could not afford to institute a recycling program.

"Queensland is the most rubbishy state in Australia and if we keep doing what we've always done, we'll keep getting what we have always got," he said.
