Runners beat a path to our door
GLADSTONE'S Botanic to Bridge is set to become another iconic event on the running calendar in the same mould as the Bridge to Brisbane, City to Surf and San Francisco's famous Bay to Breakers; where it all started.
Last weekend Bundaberg joined the party with the first running of the Cane to Coral, but it looks like Gladstone is set to eclipse its southern rival as registrations this week tipped over the 1000 mark for the August 22 event.
However Gladstone Ports Corporation CEO Leo Zussino said the Botanic to Bridge was not just about the elite athletes but focussed on everyday families to become more involved in healthier lifestyles.
“The inaugural Botanic to Bridge is our way of encouraging school children and their parents to get out and get active,” Mr Zussino said.
“At the marina there will be a Healthy Living Expo showcasing a range of healthy lifestyle options.”
The Botanic to Bridge is a Tree to Sea walk/run of 8km from the Tondoon Botanic Gardens to the marina or a shorter 3km alternative starting in Reg Tanna Park.
Major sponsors include the Queensland Government, Santos, Arrow Energy, Conco Phillips and the ANZ bank; with money raised going to community groups including the Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club and a number of schools.
Online registrations are available at Gladstone Port Corporation's Botanic to Bridge website; www.botanictobridge.com.au.
