NO bull - Somerset Regional Council are looking for the owner of a small herd of runaway water buffalo.

About a dozen of the large beasts were found on the loose in Coominya.

Somerset councillor Jim Madden said the animals were monstrous but gentle and used to human contact. They are being held at the Coominya Transfer Station.

Cr Madden said efforts to find the owner had so far proved unsuccessful. He said if the animals weren't claimed within a fortnight, they would be put up for auction and possibly destroyed.

"Impounding dog fees cost $27 a day, so I would hate to think what the bill would be for a dozen water buffalo," Cr Madden said. "As a result, I wouldn't be surprised if the owner tried to take his chances at the auction to save some money."

Cr Madden said he hoped the strange situation ended with a positive outcome. If you have any information to the ownership of the water buffalo, contact Somerset Regional Council on 5424 4000.
