RSPCA urges pet, livestock owners to protect animals

RSPCA Queensland is asking livestock and pet owners to make sure their animals are taken care of if their properties are at risk from floodwaters.

"With flash flooding already being experienced in some areas and more flooding predicted, we're urging owners to act sooner rather than leave it until the last minute," spokesman Michael Beatty said.

"In previous years numerous animals have died because they were either swept away or trapped in mud.

"We would urge anyone with animals in their care to make certain they are moved to higher ground away from possible flooding."

Domestic pet owners are also urged to make sure their animals are not trapped in flooded backyards.

"They need to be able to access an area you know won't go under water. Guinea pigs in particular are often kept in hutches in the back yard," Mr Beatty said.

"With heavy rain, the area floods and the guinea pigs drown. It's all common sense really, but sometimes common sense is sadly lacking!"

Mr Beatty also called on people to ensure their pet had identification.

"After every storm we end up with an influx of stray and traumatised animals, many of which have no identification. If they have identification - in particular a microchip - we can contact the owner immediately."
